Paul Holmes MP Calls For Votes At
Sixteen
Commenting on
the Liberal Democrat campaign to allow young people to
vote and stand for elected office at the age of 16, the
stage in life at which they are able to marry, begin full-time
work and pay income tax, Chesterfield MP Paul Holmes
said,
It is time to empower a group currently unable to
make its voice heard. It would allow young people to vote
and stand for elected office at the age of 16, the stage
in life at which they are able to begin full-time work
and pay income tax.
I cannot understand the current situation in which
a young person is old enough to place his life on the
line in this Countrys Armed Forces yet is barred
from participating in its democracy. Lowering the voting
age would be an important step toward combating growing
apathy among the young.
Pauls comments coincided with the launch of the
youth group of Chesterfield Liberal Democrats and the
introduction into Parliament to lower the age to 16, by
Liberal Democrat Youth Spokesman Mathew Green MP.
Paul added,
As a teacher for the last 22 years I know that many
16-17 year olds are just as well informed and articulate
as many older people are. I can see you no justification
for treating them like adults in other ways but not
allowing then to vote.
