"It is crucial that young people become actively involved in the decisions that affect their lives as early as possible. Sadly too many politicians pay lip service to youth involvement - preferring to engage at arms length rather than empower. The Liberal Democrats believe in giving young people power and influence. There can be no greater demonstration of trust and belief than the enfranchisement of 16 year olds.

As someone who has spent his life working with young people I know that by trusting them they will make sound and responsible decision.

To the doubters I say - every time a new group of people have gained the right to vote our democracy has gained in strength - today it needs a new injection of enthusiasm and I for one am prepared to back young people to deliver.”
